With the Yankees and Joba Chamberlain coming into town, Dave Ortiz had a few words about Joba Chambertlain.
With Chamberlain scheduled to start for the Yankees in the opener of a three-game series against the Red Sox, David Ortiz yesterday said the talented right-hander should avoid using Kevin Youkilis' head as a bull's-eye.
"None of that, man -- just play the game the way it's supposed to be, and that's about it," Ortiz said, referring to Chamberlain. "This is a guy, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everybody in the league. He's not a bad guy, but when things like that happen, people get the wrong idea."

MY TAKE ON THIS: Over and under on a bench-clearing incident. 2 innings. Should Lester throw the first brush-back in the first inning so Joba can't do the same without being tossed. That way Chamberlain will be hesitant to work close? Crazy thinking of mine. Maybe Papi or Youk is going to get brushed back early in the game. ROUND ONE. Yanks' Chamberlain held for DUI, speeding; formal charges due Monday
LINCOLN, Neb. -- New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deborah Collins said Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 near his hometown of Lincoln at about 1 a.m. Saturday. Collins said Chamberlain was taken to the Cornhusker Place Detox in Lincoln, which she said is the normal protocol.
Chamberlain was lodged at the center on charges of driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol and speeding. Collins said the county attorney likely would file formal charges Monday. An e-mail sent to Chamberlain's agent Saturday was not immediately returned

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday that he sees Joba Chamberlain beginning 2009 back in the bullpen because he hasn't thrown enough innings this season.
More good news for Red Sox and Rays fans. "We'll talk about that stuff obviously at a more appropriate time," Cashman said. "But basically we believe that you can put some guys in jeopardy by putting way too much on them when they haven't been to that level. If someone adds a significant amount of innings from the previous year in an area where they've never been, history says those guys either have breakdown or significant underperformance the year after." You know what else puts young pitchers in jeopardy? Moving them from the pen to the rotation in the middle of seasons. Chamberlain is going to be 23 next year, and it's not like he's a max-effort guy. The Yankees can be cautious with him while still using him as a starter all year.
MY TAKE ON THIS: Perhaps Cashman is auditioning for a GM position with the Sox. Certainly wasn't swift moving Joba from the pen to do starting duties. You are not supposed to have such a matter of urgency with a kid like this and that was one big bonehead mistake. Now, he's taking it easy with Joba ... he's going to be pretty good but hopefully not against the Red Sox. However, I am still not convinced that Joba is ready to pitch the final month of the season. Well, it won't be that much anyway because he won't be in the playoffs unless the Yankees trade him to a REAL TEAM. I think he should sit Joba down the remainder of the year. He is, unfortunately, their future #3 (?) starter.

Joba Chamberlain slated to return today?
September 2. According to manager Joe Girardi, Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) is expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday. Out since August 6, he'll work out of the bullpen with an eye toward potentially making a few starts later this month. "Whatever they need me to do, I'm up for it," Chamberlain said. "I feel good and ready to help in any way possible."
MY TAKE ON THIS: As I stated previously, the Yankees are going nowhere, shut him down. We shall see what transpires in the coming weeks.

TORONTO - Joba Chamberlain hopes to be pitching for the Yankees within the next two weeks, but Joe Girardi isn't ready to declare that a possibility just yet. Chamberlain played catch Tuesday, the second consecutive day he has tested his injured right shoulder on the field. He made 20 throws at 70 feet, 20 more at 90 feet, then, after a three-minute break, made 20 final throws at 75feet. "It gets loose, it gets going; it feels a lot better than it has," Chamberlain said, estimating his throwing at 80-85%.
If all goes well, Chamberlain will throw off a mound in Baltimore on Saturday. "We'll see how he feels on Sunday morning, then we'll go from there," Girardi said. "We have to see how he feels after each step." Pressed for details on what Chamberlain's next step would be after Saturday, Girardi got testy. "We don't have a date," Girardi said. "When he's ready, he's ready. I'm not getting too far ahead." Chamberlain was more than happy to look into the future, saying he believed he could be back Sept. 1.

An Over-optimistic Joba Chamberlain
TAMPA, Fla. -- Joba Chamberlain plans to start a throwing program next week and expects to rejoin the New York Yankees' rotation this month. Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday due to rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. The right-hander saw Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, one day after an MRI on the rookie's ailing shoulder.
"I'll be throwing in a week. I'll probably throw the beginning of next week," Chamberlain said Friday when he arrived at the Yankees' spring training complex. "Everything feels fine now."
The 22-year-old was removed from Monday night's start against Texas in the fifth inning with stiffness in his shoulder. He never thought the problem was serious. "No. Not at all," Chamberlain said. "It would have been different if I wasn't still throwing 99 [mph]. It was a different feeling that I never had, so I just wanted to make sure.
MY TAKE ON THIS. Sounds like the kid is over-anxious and could further damage his arm, etc. . We play the Yankees on Aug 26-28 and it looks like he's shooting for that series. I don't know the severity of his injury, but if he was part of OUR kiddie-korps, he would be shutting it down for the remainder of the season. There has been quite a bit of pressure on this kid and he is trying very hard to succeed. Whatever role he plays...starter, set-up or eventually closer, he will be good. He has the makeup of a closer.

AUGUST 6, 2008. Kevin Youkilis-1B- Red Sox
Kevin Youkilis left Wednesday's game after one inning because of a right hand contusion.
Youkilis was hit by a Luke Hochevar pitch. He stayed in to run, but Sean Casey replaced him on defense. Youkilis is day-to-day.
Joba Chamberlain-R- Yankees The Yankees said Joba Chamberlain was diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis and that he's been told to rest his arm for a week. The smart move for the Yankees would be to try to get by without Joba for the rest of the month and bring him back when rosters expand. The Cards could go back to giving save opportunities to Ryan Franklin for now, and they still haven't ruled out bringing Adam Wainwright back as a closer.
Chris Britton-R- Yankees Yankees recalled RHP Chris Britton from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Britton has a 3.38 ERA in 10 2/3 innings for the Yankees this season. He'll get another chance to pitch in middle relief.
Brian Giles-OF- Padres Brian Giles has been claimed off revocable waivers, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. Giles and dozens of other players, but this one qualifies as news for some reason. It's highly unlikely that Giles will be traded. The Padres intend to pick up his option and keep him for 2009.
Tim Lincecum-S- Giants Tim Lincecum allowed just two runs in eight innings to lead the Giants past the Braves on Wednesday afternoon. Lincecum allowed just five hits while striking out eight, although he did issue four walks on the afternoon. Still, he picked up his first win since July 13 and lowered his ERA to 2.68 on the season. He'll pitch in Houston in his next outing.
Eric Chavez-3B- Athletics thletics transferred third baseman Eric Chavez from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Chavez is out for the season after surgery on his right shoulder.
Jeff Karstens-S- Pirates Jeff Karstens took a perfect game into the eighth inning and complete a two-hit shutout to defeat the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Karstens, who gave up 18 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings for the Yankees last year, is unscored upon in 15 innings for the Pirates. The fast start practically guarantees that he'll remain in the rotation for the rest of the season, but it barely alters his long-term outlook. The poor man's Bronson Arroyo shouldn't last as more than a fifth starter or be a particularly good one of those.

The 22-year-old right-hander was removed from Monday night's start against the Rangers in the fifth inning with stiffness in his shoulder.
Ian Kennedy was set to take Chamberlain's turn in the rotation and start Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, the New YMork Daily News reported.

Yesterday, Chamberlain flew back to New York and underwent a series of tests, including an MRI, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.
The Yankees already are without No. 1 starter Chien-Ming Wang and right-hander Phil Hughes. Subtracting Chamberlain from the rotation would be a huge blow to the team’s postseason chances.
“I think we’re all hopeful,” Girardi said. “I hope we don’t miss him for very long. “But you think of a guy of Joba’s caliber and you know he’s going to miss a start; that doesn’t mean the guy who replaces him can’t pitch well.” Girardi said the 22-year-old right-hander probably would miss his next turn in the rotation. Anything longer would be a setback for the injury-riddled Yankees pitching staff. “I envision him not making his next start,” Girardi said. “Beyond that, I can’t say.”
Girardi said his options for replacing Chamberlain include moving right-hander Darrell Rasner back into the rotation or recalling a pitcher from Triple-A Scranton. Girardi said the Yankees will be cautious with Chamberlain, even though the team is in a close playoff race.

Joba outduels Beckett; Sox drop a squeaker 1-0
July 25, 2008. BOSTON, MA -- The Red Sox dropped a tough one to the Yankees last night 1-0 in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel between Josh Beckett and Joba Chamberlain.
David Ortiz was back. Josh Beckett was pitching for the Red Sox. The Fenway Park crowd was pumped up for the renewal of the rivalry with the Yankees.
None of that bothered Joba Chamberlain. The right-hander took another big step in his transition from the bullpen to the rotation with his best major league start as surging New York beat Boston 1-0 Friday night for its seventh straight win. The third-place Yankees pulled within two of Boston and stayed three back of AL East-leading Tampa Bay, which won 5-3 at Kansas City. New York also bolstered its bullpen and lineup, acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and left-hander Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
For New York, Chamberlain's effort and the added help made it a big night.
"I've had quality starts against everybody," Chamberlain bragged. "You understand it's going to be a tough game. He [Beckett] is an unbelievable pitcher. He battles and claws."
"I was the second-best pitcher today," Beckett said, "and ultimately that gets you a loss most of the time." Chamberlain has allowed three runs or less in all 10 starts this year. On Friday, he gave up three singles -- one to Ortiz, who missed the previous 45 games with a left wrist injury -- and struck out nine in a career-high seven innings.

This is truly a 3-team race and we have the least momentum out of those teams. We could find ourselves 5 games behind the Yankees and Ray in the next 10 days or so. Manny didn't even pinch-hit in this game, so that probably tells you something right there. Could be out for the weekend. Hopefully, he won't be DL'd. We are in big trouble. Get out the pooper-scoopers!!! Good bye, Manny. Hope you last until game 4 of this year's World Series. We need to have you against the Mets. After that....you are gone-a-mundo!!! I guess you'll get a 4-year $100M deal someplace.
